Dr. Omar Shakir, MD, MBA is an accomplished anterior and posterior segment surgeon and innovator dedicated to advancing the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Shakir completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Yale, where he honed his skills in managing complex retinal diseases. Six years ago, he founded Coastal Eye, a cutting-edge ophthalmology practice in Greenwich, CT.

About three years ago, Dr. Shakir pioneered office-based surgery for both anterior and posterior segment procedures. He is the first in the world to launch a full-scale office-based retina surgery program, a groundbreaking achievement that has redefined how these surgeries can be performed. His leadership in this area has earned him invitations to present his work at national and international conferences.


Dr. Shakir actively participates in phase 2, phase 3, and post-market studies for a range of ophthalmic conditions, including intraocular lens advancements, wet age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He has also reimagined the floater removal experience, offering patients an in-office procedure performed under topical anesthesia—a revolutionary approach that combines precision and patient comfort.

A passionate advocate for global ophthalmology, Dr. Shakir envisions implementing office-based surgical protocols worldwide to improve access to care in resource-limited settings.
