He is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist specializing in oculoplastic and orbital surgery.</p> <p>Dr. Aakalu earned his BA in Neuroscience from The Johns Hopkins University, his MD from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and his MPH in Health Policy and Management from Columbia University. He completed residency and fellowship training in ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery at the University of Illinois at Chicago.</p> <p>His research focuses on ocular surface disease, corneal wound healing, thyroid eye disease, regenerative medicine, and translational therapeutics for rare diseases. He has received significant NIH and Department of Defense funding, holds multiple patents, and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. Bogaard, MD, PhD</strong> grew up in Chicago, IL where he attended medical school at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He completed his residency at Medical College of Wisconsin, where he regularly attended MOS meetings. After completing Vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at University of Virginia, he was excited to return to the Midwest as an assistant professor of Ophthalmology at Indiana University and since 2025 as the Service Chief of Ophthalmology at Eskenazi Hospital. Since residency, he has had an interest in combined anterior and posterior segment surgery, with a particular interest in secondary intraocular lenses, especially scleral fixated intraocular lenses.
