Office-based Surgery for Anterior and Posterior Segment
Presented virtually by Omar Shakir, MD, MBA
    Coastal Eye, Greenwich, CT

Explore the transformative potential of performing advanced ophthalmic surgeries in an office-based setting. Topics will include the clinical and logistical advantages of office-based surgery, such as better technology, faster recovery times, and reduced overhead costs, as well as safety data and protocols that ensure optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Shakir will discuss how this innovative approach can reshape global ophthalmology by providing greater access to surgical care in resource-limited settings.

Dr. Omar Shakir, MD, MBA is an accomplished anterior and posterior segment surgeon and innovator dedicated to advancing the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Shakir completed a two-year vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Yale, where he honed his skills in managing complex retinal diseases. Six years ago, he founded Coastal Eye, a cutting-edge ophthalmology practice in Greenwich, CT.

About three years ago, Dr. Shakir pioneered office-based surgery for both anterior and posterior segment procedures. He is the first in the world to launch a full-scale office-based retina surgery program, a groundbreaking achievement that has redefined how these surgeries can be performed. His leadership in this area has earned him invitations to present his work at national and international conferences.

Dr. Shakir actively participates in phase 2, phase 3, and post-market studies for a range of ophthalmic conditions, including intraocular lens advancements, wet age-related macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He has also reimagined the floater removal experience, offering patients an in-office procedure performed under topical anesthesia—a revolutionary approach that combines precision and patient comfort.

A passionate advocate for global ophthalmology, Dr. Shakir envisions implementing office-based surgical protocols worldwide to improve access to care in resource-limited settings. By reducing the dependency on extensive healthcare infrastructure and staffing, his work has the potential to make a significant global impact.
