    Dr. T. Y. Alvin Liu is the James P. Gills Jr. M.D. and Heather Gills Rising Professor of Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), where he holds faculty appointments in both the School of Medicine and the School of Engineering. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, Cornell University (B.A.), and Columbia University (M.D.), he completed ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal fellowship training at the Wilmer Eye Institute at JHU. He was named an “Emerging Vision Scientist” by the National Alliance for Eye and Vision Research in 2020.

    Dr. Liu serves as the inaugural director of JHU's first endowed AI center in medicine, leading initiatives that integrate AI into clinical care and operations, such as autonomous diabetic retinopathy screening and generative AI for revenue cycle management. He focuses on real-world implementation, stakeholder alignment, and impact assessment.

    He co-chairs the AI and Data Trust Council at Johns Hopkins Medicine, ensuring ethical AI deployment across the health system. Nationally, he serves on the American Academy of Ophthalmology AI Committee, the AMA AI Specialty Society Collaborative, and the leadership team of JAMA + AI, helping shape the future of AI governance and innovation in healthcare.
